1. to be indecisive or delay acting, as in order to gain time or avoid conflict.
The company was not returning her calls after her encouraging job interview and she suspected they were temporizing, perhaps hoping to conduct more interviews before making their final decision.

2. to draw out discussions or negotiations in order to gain time.
3. to behave or act in a manner appropriate to the time or circumstances, rather than according to personal beliefs or principles.
4. to yield to prevailing conditions; compromise.
