1. to cause to become calmer or less agitated, esp. by satisfying demands or making concessions; placate.
The prime minister hoped to appease the dictator and prevent a full-scale war.
She appeased the howling child with the promise of a new toy.
2. to cause to subside; satisfy.
He appeased his thirst with a glass of beer.
