1. absence of government or law within a state or society.
After the leader’s assassination, there was anarchy until one of the rebel factions was able to gain control.

2. political and social disorder resulting from a lack or absence of governmental authority.
Many were senselessly murdered during the period of anarchy that followed the revolution.

3. a state of confusion or disorder; chaos.
The power blackout caused anarchy in the city.
