transitive verb
1. to make certain or final; secure; settle.
A week before the end of the season, the team clinched first place.
It was the offer of more money that clinched the deal.
2. to hammer down sideways (the protruding point of a nail) to make more secure.
3. to fasten by means of clinched nails.

intransitive verb
1. of two boxers, to grasp each other so as to impede blows.
2. (informal) to embrace.
