plural: stigmas, stigmata

1. a long-lasting mark or stain on one’s character or reputation, esp. of disgrace or reproach.
He was never able to overcome the stigma of having been impeached.
2. a persistent social characterization of a behavior or condition as a sign of immorality or disgrace.
Those with mental illnesses still face stigma and inadequate care.
There was a great stigma attached to divorce in those days.
3. a mark or pore on the surface of the skin or of a plant.
4.  a spot on the skin that bleeds as the result of nervous tension or emotional trauma.
5. part of a plant that receives pollen; pistil.
