A species is one particular group of living things. There are very many different species of animals and plants in the world. Cats, dogs, and people are of three different species. Members of the same species produce young together as part of a natural process. That means that cats naturally produce kittens, for example. Humans produce human babies. Roses of one species produce new roses of the same species.

Cats and dogs belong to different species.
Lions and tigers are both “big cats” and they are similar in many ways, but they actually belong to different species.
