something, esp. money, that is illicitly promised or given in return for privileges or favors, usu. to someone in a position of public trust.
The congressman was found to have taken bribes and was put under arrest.
The judge was offered a bribe, but it was flatly refused.

transitive verb

to give or offer a bribe to.
He would never have risen to that position if he had not bribed someone in power.
