to enter into active and usu. violent opposition against an established authority or political system.
When bread was scarce and the burden of taxes became unbearable, the citizens revolted.

transitive verb

to cause to experience disgust or shock; repel or repulse.
The dignitaries were revolted by the conditions in the refugee camp.
Their attitude towards women revolts me.

noun

a rebellion against an established authority, esp. the state.
The army put an end to the revolt.
