1. a system of symbols used in a particular field.
Greek letters such as pi and sigma are used in mathematical notation along with Arabic numerals and various other symbols.
He’s an accomplished songwriter, and yet he never learned to read or write musical notation.

2. the process or act of noting by means of such a system.
She alternated playing a new bar or two on the piano with a quick notation on paper.

3. the act of making written notes.
The professor lectured, and the students busied themselves with their notation.

4. a brief written record or note.
A previous reader of the book had made a notation in the margin.
