intransitive verb

1. to struggle to master a difficult object, problem, or opponent (often followed by “with”).
She grappled with the tangled mass of wires until she finally got them separated.
The government is grappling with the problem of inflation.
We’ve been grappling with this question for years and don’t seem closer to finding an answer.

2. to grasp, twist, or wrestle in close combat.
The police officer and the robber grappled for the fallen pistol.

noun

1. a metal hook with several claws used to drag objects closer or secure them; grapnel.

2. a seizing, gripping, or wrestling action.
