The Display Options menu shows and hides different features in Wordsmyth’s dictionary entry display. This menu is available at the top of every entry and can be used to make changes at any time.
Show Syllables
To show or hide syllables in the entry’s headword spelling, go to “Display Options” and click “Show Syllables.” You can also view the headword’s syllables by clicking the arrow next to the headword. This feature allows you to see how words may be correctly divided in writing.
Show Lookup History
To view words you’ve recently looked up, go to Display Options and click “Show Lookup History.” This will show or hide the Lookup History box within dictionary entries. To revisit a previous entry, click its link in the Lookup History box.
Double Click Lookup
Double Click Lookup is a great way to interactively learn new words within the dictionary.
- First, go to “Display Options” and click “Double Click Lookup”
- Next, select any word in a definition, example, or feature and double-click it
- The entry for the word you clicked will load on the page
Show Word Combinations
“Word Combinations” shows a list of words that most commonly combine with the word you looked up. To activate the Word Combinations feature:
- Go to “Display Options” and click “Show Word Combinations”
- Then, click the “Word Combinations” link in the “features” bar to go directly to the feature

Show Word Parts
Word Parts shows the roots and affixes that make up headwords and displays the language origin of these parts. To activate the “Word Parts” feature:
- Under “Display options,” click “Show Word Parts”
- Next, click “Word Parts” in the “features” bar to go directly to the feature
There are two additional features within “Word Parts.” “More about this word part” tells more about the origin of a particular word part and expands on its meaning and usage. “Example words” provides a list of example words that contain the word part. This feature is available for Wordsmyth subscribers only.
Show Spanish Support
Wordsmyth Dictionaries contain integrated Spanish support for core headwords. The Intermediate Dictionary offers translation for all its headwords as well as for all the example sentences it contains. Headword translations for these same words can also be seen in the other dictionary levels. To activate Spanish support features:
- Go to “Display options” and click “Show Spanish support”
- Spanish translations will appear under definitions. Also, in the Intermediate Dictionary, translations of example sentences will appear beneath the examples.

Pronunciation
Wordsmyth offers three different pronunciation display options: Wordsmyth, Phonics, and IPA (the International Phonetic Alphabet). To change the pronunciation display within an entry, go to “Display options” and select “Pronunciation.” From the dropdown menu, select one of the three options provided. You can switch between pronunciation styles at any time from any entry.
Entry Formats
Dictionary entries have two formats: Classic, the original Wordsmyth format, and Standard, the current Wordsmyth entry format. To change how entries are formatted, go to “Display options” and select “Entry Formats.” Click “Classic” or “Standard” to switch between the two formats.
