Evidence is something that gives you a reason to believe something. When you have evidence that the dog slept on the couch, it means there is some reason to believe that. Dirty footprints or dog hair may be evidence that makes you believe the dog slept on the couch.

example:
Scientists have been searching for evidence of life on distant planets.
I didn’t believe what he said because he couldn’t give me any evidence for it.
