1. something joined to another thing but not an integral part of it; supplement; accessory.

2. a person who assists another, esp. in a subordinate position.

adjective

1. attached or connected but not fully integrated; supplementary; subordinate.
The women’s college was originally founded as an adjunct institution to the university.

having temporary or part-time status on a staff or faculty.
The adjunct professors are paid by the semester and do not receive the same benefits as full-time staff members.
