WOTD: scrounge

transitive verb

1. to seek out and gather, especially by salvaging scraps (often followed by “up” or “together”).
I haven’t been shopping for a while, but I’ll see what I can scrounge up for dinner.

2. to borrow without intending to return or repay; take at someone else’s expense.
I used to be friendly with the neighbors, but they were always scrounging stuff from me.

intransitive verb

1. to search in a disorganized way for something; forage (usually followed by “around”).
I found him in the garage, scrounging around for a pliers.

2. to borrow or seek to borrow something one does not intend to repay; wheedle.
I got tired of him scrounging, so I finally bought him a giant pack of ballpoint pens.
