one who is honored for achievement in a particular field or by a particular award, esp. in the arts or sciences.
He is a Nobel laureate in economics.
She has been a laureate in both prestigious piano competitions.

adjective
given especial honor or high praise, esp. by an official body.
The poet and playwright John Dryden was the first poet laureate of England.

 

Grammar note:
The adjective “laureate” is one of a number of adjectives that always, or usually, follow the noun they modify rather than coming before it.  That is why we say “poet laureate” rather than “laureate poet.”
