someone or something that signals or foreshadows a later arrival or occurrence; herald; forerunner.
The robin is a harbinger of spring.
The closing down of several newspapers was a harbinger of the tyranny and oppression that was to come.

transitive verb
to give an early sign of (an approaching person or event)
Tremors in the preceding weeks harbingered the massive earthquake.
