1. a shallow area within a body of water.
2. an elevated ridge or area in the bottom of a body of water, esp. one that is uncovered at low tide; sandbar.

adjective

shallow, esp. when constituting a hazard for boats.
example: A fleet of fifteen warships lay moored in shoal water.

intransitive verb

to become shallower.
example: We got into the channel, and continued some time in deep water, but this suddenly shoaled, and the boats grounded near a mangrove, just as we came in sight of a village.

transitive verb
1. to cause to become shallower.
2. to sail or pilot (a vessel) into dangerously shallow waters; run aground.
