When you feel sad because another person is sad, you are feeling sympathy. When you have sympathy, you understand and feel sorry about the sadness or trouble that another person is having.

example:
Maya’s mom has great sympathy for the people who lost their homes in the hurricane.
Gabe felt sympathy for Kristin when her cat died. He knew that Kristen really loved her cat.
Sam’s dad is a doctor. He feels a lot of sympathy for his patients who are very sick.
