transitive verb

1. to give individually or with others to a common fund or collective effort.
I’m happy to contribute my time and effort to such a good cause.
They contributed considerable funds to the campaign to save the old movie theater from destruction.

2. to provide (written material) for publication.
She contributed two articles to the journal last year.

intransitive verb

1. to donate something, such as money or time, to a common fund or collective effort.
They contribute to charity every year.
We regularly contribute to our local animal shelter.

2. to play a part in or add to (usually followed by “to”).
Her wonderful acting certainly contributed to the success of the play.
He never once contributed to the conversation.
The dog’s barking contributes heavily to the noise level around here.
