definition 1:  the study of the structure and formation of phrases and sentences.
example:  She is a linguist specializing in German syntax.

definition 2:  the rules in a language that govern the structure and formation of sentences.
example:  “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously” is a famous example of a sentence that is semantically absurd, but whose syntax is without fault.

definition 3: the word order or pattern of word order in a particular phrase or sentence.
example:  The complex syntax used by Henry James makes reading his novels a challenge.
