1. causing emotional or physical suffering; painful.
example: The war had caused grievous injuries to both his body and spirit.
example: His grievous remarks were made out of spite.

2. expressing or full of grief; anguished.
example: When the shouting on the street turned to grievous cries, we feared the worst.

3. grave and deplorable; heinous.
example: He’d committed a grievous wrong and yet he felt no remorse.
